Intra-rep Pauses

Over my years of studying I've read a lot about the great results that the old school strength and physique legends got from Intra-rep Pauses. And I know that both Mike and Ray Mentzer used them in their training a lot, with great results. So, I decided it was time to try them.

On this training cycle I've added them into three of my six training days a week. Using them on my Pull-ups, Barbell Curls, Triceps Pressdowns, Incline Presses, Behind the Neck Pulldowns and Overhead Presses on the 2nd day of training for each of them. And I've been loving them.

Here's a nice way to incorporate them using the Pull-up. Take a nice slow and deliberate pull to the mid-point, then pause and hold for a 10 seconds static contraction, then take another 5 seconds to finish pulling to the top. From there, lower slowly and deliberately for 5 seconds to the midpoint, then hold for another 10 seconds static contraction, then finish by taking 5 seconds to lower to the bottom.

It's a great way to stimulate the     muscles in a very different manner. And a great tool to add to the arsenal.

How do you know if you're losing body fat?



One of the Questions that I've received a ton over the last few decades of being a professional in this business is: "Brett, how do I know if I'm losing body fat while I'm losing weight?"

A great question, and a surprisingly simple answer.

If you're losing body fat, what's left? The answer, of course, is muscle tissue.

So, if you're losing body fat, you will be looking more toned, leaner, more muscular and more chiseled.

If, however, you're getting smaller, but you're still looking like your pudgier self; well, then you're not losing body fat, you're losing muscle. Which will weaken your metabolism and basically guarantee that you'll gain all the weight back plus interest.

So, always make sure that you're becoming more chiseled, leaner, more muscular and you can guarantee that you're losing body fat and your changes have a much better chance of being permanent.

Mass Building update

It's awesome to see that after 12 weeks on my mass building cycle I'm officially 15 pounds heavier. And, with only a slight blurring of definition, it's even more awesome that the vast majority of the gain is good quality muscle mass!!

A great one for the Upper Back

Here's a great super set for the upper back. The final one of the night for me before moving onto the mid back. 10 barbell Power Shrugs with 505 pounds followed immediately by 20 Dumbbell Shrugs with a pair of 95 pounders. Great stuff.
